About the documentaries

Three Taiwanese documentaries were presented at the New York Museum of Modern Art's annual showcase of nonfiction film and video from around the world this past February at their Documentary Fortnight 2009. The three documentaries are "Exotic Exoticism", "Shonenko", and "The Secret in the Satchel".

Exotic Exoticism (2007)
Audience: All ages
Runtime: 56 minutes
Though plants might be classified as exotic/native/endemic species, everyday-life plants are too close to know (their names). Take a journey through Taiwan and learn about the island's rich and diverse flora. (Mandarin language with English subtitles.)

Shonenko (2006)
Audience: Not recommended for under 13
Runtime: 60 minutes
Through a work-study program, 8419 Taiwanese children went to Japan; they, instead, manufactured fighter planes in Japanese Naval Arsenals during the Second World War. These are their brave and heart-breaking stories. (Mandarin, Taiwanese, and Japanese language with English subtitles.)

The Secret in the Satchel (2007)
Audience: Not recommended for under 18
Runtime: 51 minutes
This documentary explores the complicated interpersonal, family, sexual, and violent relationships of this new generation of troubled youths. (Mandarin with English subtitles.)
